I also see that 'Starfighters' were support - maybe this is where the band met future guitarist, Rik Sanford? Interestingly UFO's then guitarist in 1988, 'Myke Gray' (who'm Rik replaced) secured a support slot with 'Ozzy' on the '1988 UK Club Tour' with his newly re-formed band 'Jagged Edge' - MORE

An interesting interview with Neil Carter, who joined UFO in time to appear at Readings Rock Festival on 23rd August 1980 and went on to record what a lot of UFO fans regard as one of the best 1980's releases - 'The Wild, The Willing and The Innocent', 'Mechanix' and 'Making Contact'.
It seems that Phil Collen, who at that time was with 'GIRL' (now with 'Def Leppard'), introduced Neil to UFO. Neil remained with the band until April 1983 before joing 'The Gary Moore Band'.
I came across this website a couple of weeks ago and started to contribute to the UFO web page. Since then and over 1,000 edits (got into the top 10 list by the way) and the section is looking good.
What I love, and inspired me to contribute is the 'Timeline' feature.
Go over the website and start contributing yourselves. Its important to ensure that UFO get an accurate site. When I first logged in there were only two or three albums on their, and as you can see, they are all now 'present and correct'.

While we wait for the NEXT installment of all things UFO, I return back to the ARCHIVES
...Has anyone come across a long running Television series named "Insight"? It seems that back in 1980, there was an episode titled: Seventeen Going on Nowhere (1980) (USA TV). I would like to get more information, so if anyone knows anymore or even has a copy of the episode, drop me an e-mail.
Paul talks about his hard-hitting new rock album VIRTUAL INSANITY
and about the virtually insane touring schedule which he has recently completed with UFO.
An interesting interview with Paul touching on the creation of his new album, chats about some of the tracks that appear on Virtual Insanity, the recent USA tour, the summer shows, favourite songs to perform live. Paul also looks briefly back over his career and touches on the 40th Anniversary for UFO in 2009.
On Paul's website, there is a dedicated page to the PAUL RAYMOND PROJECT album, VIRTUAL INSANITY which contain soundclips and ways to purchase.
For the tenth installment of the "Shockwaves Skull Sessions" podcast, host Bob Nalbandian is joined by guest Martin Popoff (author of "UFO: Shoot Out The Lights"), and rock music heavyweight Brian Brinkerhoff as they explore UFO from 1970 through 2006.

"UFO turned in a strong set that featured all the 70's classics plus one new song from each of the last two new CDs. Jeff Kolman filled in on bass and did a good job. The band only had 60 minutes but did a great set in unreal heat on stage. They are now headed back to England with one more US date in Aurora, IL in early August. The guys told me next year marks the 40th anniversary of the band and they are planning some special stuff. Phil also told me the next studio CD will be an all out heavy album with no ballads. They hoped Pete would get it together to make it for what should be a special 2009 for UFO!" - Eddie Trunk
Thanks to John Andrews for sending in some photos of the FT. WORTH concert
John has also posted 'Daylight Goes To Town' from Fort Worth on - the link can also be found on the same page
Going back 34 years - A gem of an Advert - NME from June 8th 1974:
Chrysalis Records advert for the newly released album, 'Phenomenon' wirth a rare photo with Paul Chapman appearing alongside Michael Schenker. Also shows the mini-tour dates.
Also on the back of this advert - I have placed a scan of related musical happenings of that same week - few interesting names cropping up such as Be-Bop Delux, John Lennon (signing in at hotels under the name 'Dr. Winston'), Rory Gallagher, Paul McCartney and Wings, Elton John, etc etc. Also Wurth Open Air Connection - Nazereth playing US dates with Blue Oyster Cult back in 1974.
I have been getting various e-mails regarding the 'Metal Moments' interview link that numerous fans have been hearing about during the UFO 2008 USA Tour. I have created a web page with an excerpt from the show with a link to the actual podcast. Interesting listening, just to remind us all of the various UFO line-ups through the years. A Vinnie Moore track also features.

I worked on the UFO re-issues. All the 2" master tapes were examined and played from top to toe in a search for unreleased, different mixes or alternate versions...alas their were none! Hence the reason for bonus live material over any studio tracks. The live stuff has not been released before - I personally mixed the tracks with the Abbey Road engineer - all taken from the original 2" masters. The Roundhouse tracks have been bootlegged before but they came from a dodgy unbaked 1/4" flat board mix.
The 'Obsession' tracks were all recorded by Ron Nevison - Six shows on that particular run of dates were recorded - but remained in the EMI vaults, unmixed until now. There were literally a hundred boxes of recordings to work through and every show - including soundchecks and encores - was recorded in glorious multitracked stereo.
'Strangers...' does not have more bonus material because the CD running length had reached 76 minutes...that's why the 'Obsession' release includes the version of 'Pack It Up And Go'.
By the way, the reason that the 1st three albums had plenty of bonus tracks was because they were there to be found. In fact there were actually several more tracks that didn't make the cut and were discarded for various reasons...including some nice Schenker instrumental stuff.
We had extensive discussions with producer Ron Nevison and members of the band about studio outtakes and unreleased tracks for 'Lights Out' and 'Obsession' including rehearsal tapes but alas nothing was kept or indeed recorded - Nevison went straight into recording the albums with no pre-production. He and the band turned up in the studio and they commenced recording the songs right there and then.
Look out for further developments with the next batch of re-issues - the Chapman era. Tape research will commence shortly. Maybe - just maybe - there'll be some buried treasure.
Finally, there is a planned box set to finish off the series next year....I can tell you that one of the planned discs will be a DVD featuring choice and vintage footage.
Great to see that gig reviews and photos are still being sent in from the recent USA 2008 tour - Thanks to Jorge (from Mexico City), travelling a long way (The route: Mexico City - Chihuahua - El Paso TX - Las Vegas NV)
Two additional videos found on 'YouTube' shot at 'The Catalyst' and added to the current 'Love to Love' one posted on the 8th May entry below. 'Doctor Doctor' and 'Shoot Shoot'. A great jamming section in the later.
You would have seen some of these photos posted on the 'Official UFO - Photo section' website, taken at 'The Catalyst' in Santa Cruz. Here are some others sent to me by D.J. Dougherty
Well here we are, the band have completed their USA 2008 tour, travelling over 7,000 miles since starting on the East coast in Baltimore on 9th April 2008 to the last gig of the tour at 'The Grail'.
I honestly can't remember a tour that has been so enthusiastically received by fans and the 'UFO Live in 2008' web page has been filled with reviews, pictures, video, radio, articles and posters every single day since, including the nights off that UFO didn't play, totalling 30 straight entries
Thank You all for your support, such is your love for the band.
Thanks to Rob De Luca for fitting in both Musically and Personaly, you have helped to keep the ship sailing :-) - Safe Journey home to you Rob and to the rest of the band and crew.
For me, the pleasure has been in sharing the fun time over the tour. I will continue to post new material - Lets look forward to some Summer Festivals and some surprise tours - We wait with interest... Tris
Footnote: I know this entry has actually been posted before UFO hit the stage on their last gig (The Grail) of this tour, as it's 1.00am here in the UK, so I can :-)

UFO booked to headline new Aurora classic rock fest
"AURORA -- Now the truth can be told: the secret headliner for the new Downtown Alive! Rocks the Fox festival is hard-rocking British band UFO.
The band, led by Phil Mogg and Pete Way, will provide the explosive finale to the new end-of-summer classic rock festival, scheduled for Aug. 1 and 2. Other acts for Rocks the Fox include Blue Oyster Cult, Molly Hatchet, ARRA, Dbl. Shot and AC/DC tribute act Problem Child.
Rocks the Fox is a new event this year. According to Dale Hazlewood of the Mayor's Office of Special Events, the idea was to build on the success of Blues on the Fox, the weekend festival that kicks off Downtown Alive! each summer.
And with extra funds this year, made available when the Midwest Literary Festival was canceled, the idea of another weekend event to bookend Blues on the Fox was born.
The contract with UFO was signed months ago, but under the agreement city officials couldn't talk about their secret headliner until now. But even without that big name on the marquee, Hazlewood said the free downtown festival has drawn attention from around the country.
"We're getting tons of calls, a dozen or so a week" he said. "People keep wanting to know how to buy tickets. They're having a hard time wrapping their heads around it."
Last year's Blues on the Fox, headlined by the Robert Cray Band, drew 10,000 to 12,000 people each day. It's likely this year's blues fest, with big names like Elvin Bishop and Kenny Wayne Shepherd, will bring in at least that many, if not more. And Hazlewood said the new Rocks the Fox festival is expected to match that attendance."
Lauren Harris' eagerly anticipated debut album, "Calm Before The Storm" - The CD version of the album will be released worldwide on June 23 through Demolition DR2 Records and will include an extra bonus track, a cover of UFO's "Natural Thing" and a seperate DVD disc which will include the showreel, two full promo videos and slide show.
Lauren is the daughter of IRON MAIDEN's Steve Harris, who guests on various tracks of the album, the first time he has played on any recording other than those of MAIDEN.
"Calm Before The Storm" track listing:
01. Steal Your Fire, 02. Your Turn, 03. Get Over It, 04. Like It Or Not, 05. From The Bottom To The Top
06. Let Us Be, 07. Hurry Up, 08. Come On Over, 09. Hit Or Miss, 10. See Through, 11. You Say 12. Natural Thing (UFO cover - bonus track)
The band have now covered some 3,000 miles out of the total of 7,300 miles of this USA tour and I see that Vinnie has posted some information regarding the current USA tour on his 'Official VM Forum':
"Regarding Phil, yes he has been sick with a flu. The last 4 or 5 shows have been a struggle for him. In Chicago he was close to passing out onstage. He is getting better but not 100% as of yet. I am sure he should be a lot better tomorrow after our day off today. It seems almost impossible on tour to not come down with something. Honestly, I have had a bug also but it didn't hit me as hard as it did Phil. I am really happy to have the inevitable tour cold/stomach virus behind me now". VM.
All credit for the band to soldier on, not like us guys with a regular job, who can rest at home and stay in bed for a few days, whilst we recover. :)
Already there is a lot of 'Audience Recorded' material (Bootlegs) floating around on the Internet. As they are in the public domain, I have decided to post 5 tracks, the first being a 'compilation' of the 'Starland Ballroom concert. I personally have mixed views, its great that there is a 'hunger' from the fans out there for as much 'UFO' music as possible and it's great for the band to have as much exposure as possible - Hence this website, my passion for the band. On the other hand, I am very protective and do not like to see money being made with no benefit to the five band members, crew, management - 'UFO family'. I guess its a sign to all involved that UFO are important both musically and personally, so for the benefit of the 'Misty Green and Blue' fans,
I received this from Glenn yesterday but didn't get a chance to post it - 'Let It Roll'...
"Last night UFO were fantastic in Milwaukee. Just to let you know they opened the show with Mother Mary and then did Long Gone. I was surprised that I quite a few in the crowd went nuts. As the boys come out for the encore, they had a impromptu meeting and Phil said “We were just discussing what to play next and decided to mix things up a bit” They then ripped into Let It Roll followed buy Doctor Doctor and then Shoot Shoot"

the bassplayer who will be standing in for Pete
on the April/May tourdates
will be ROB De LUCA
from the Sebastian Bach Band and Spread Eagle
Rob De Luca is the bassist/backing vocalist in the SEBASTIAN BACH BAND.
The Bach band toured as direct support for GUNS N' ROSES on their "2006-07 Chinese Democracy World Tour".

The US embassy did not say why they turned down the application. We will now start to make arrangements for a bass player to stand in for Pete
on the USA tourdates, and will let you know shortly who this will be."
Comment: It's unbelievable, and re-enforces the fact that history has a habit of repeating itself: FBI KO UFO tour
UFO/DIO/Ex-AC/DC Drummer To Play With UFO Tribute Band - Thursday February 28th, 2008
UFO/DIO/ex-AC/DC drummer Simon Wright will perform with the UFO tribute band ROCK BOTTOM on Thursday, February 28 at Paladino's in Tarzana, California. According to Wright "they [ROCK BOTTOM] are a dedicated bunch of musicians intent on recreating the glory days of UFO — the 'Strangers in the Night' album."
In a September 2007 interview with Get Ready To Roll!, Simon Wright — who first played with UFO on the "Walk On Water" tour and stood in for Andy Parker again last year [March 2007 - TOUR photos] after Andy broke his leg — was asked about how the two UFO tours compared (the first being with Michael Schenker on guitar, and then this recent one with Vinnie Moore).
"Well, first of all, you're talking about two incredible guitarists, with different personalities," Simon said. "In '95/'98 the band had just kinda reformed again, so I think there was more pressure around, for all — but we managed to do some great shows. Michael was outstanding. So was Vinnie this past year. Things seemed a lot more relaxed this time, but still very tight and professional. Vinnie is an exceptional guitar player and a great bloke."

Joe Bonamassa abducted and Free’d by UFO!
Classic Rock went to see US blues whizz Joe Bonamassa play a small gig to 80 people at the BBC’s Maida Vale studios last night, and was astonished to learn that Mr B. once ‘depped’ (ie stood in for) Michael Schenker at a UFO gig. “Just for one gig,” he joked in front of the invited audience. “I mean, can you imagine me with a Flying V?”
But it was to be a fateful meeting. “After the gig, Pete Way gave me a cassette he’d made of Free. It blew me away from the opening notes. I was writing songs for my first solo album at the time, and it was like I had to stop the car, get out, set fire to the car, and get a new car…”
RETROSPECTIVE UPDATE - FORWARD TO FEBRUARY 2012
There is an article written about the audition in the Feb. 2012 issue of Classic Rock magazine featuring Joe on the cover.
Here is a quote from the article...
C.R.: Little known Joey Bones Fact #1: he almost joined U.F.O..
"Back in Sept. or Oct. of 1996, Joe was invited to Columbus, Oh. to rehearse with UFO. In Joe's head he was just filling in on guitar to help audition drummers or something. The drummer that day, Jerry Shirley, remembers things differently:
"Pete (Way, bass) needed a drummer to audition this hot young guitar player to see if he was right for UFO", says Jerry. "I thought Joe was brilliant. Joe turned up with a Flying V having learned Lights Out and a handful of other tracks". At the end of the day, Pete Way changed his life. "Pete turns to me and says, have you ever heard of a guitar player named Paul Kossoff? Your vibrato reminds me a lot of him".
He gave Joe a mixed tape of Free to listen to on the way home. Joe said "Ultimately, it changed my life".
OK, as we are eagearly awaiting the USA tour, Showtime HD-DVD, I have been busy updating this website, starting with an interesting 1979 SOUNDS music paper interview with Phil Mogg:
