BB king

10th October - BB Kings - New York - NY

UFO were good at BBs Saturday night. So hard when a band has 40 years of music to play and so much you want to hear. The set was pretty much all the Schenker classics, a couple new tunes, and one Chapman tune (Mystery Train). Phil Mogg is a true freak. He looked and sounded great. Of course I miss Pete Way but Rob Deluca did a great job filling in. Sound could have been better, but the music is so great it cuts through just about any issue. Still some of the most timeless classy hard rock ever! Hope to catch another show before they leave the USA. Every title from Phenomenon through Misdemeanor is now remastered in new expanded editions on EMI/UK. They are awesome.

The Visitor Review - one of the shortest but 8/10

UFO – The Visitor
(SPV – 2009)
Those UK Rock Legends are back from their rock ‘n’ roll planet but they’ve not got Pete Way on board this time as he is sadly suffering from liver disease. Get well soon mate!

Anyways, despite the above omittance, the band are back and sound great on these new numbers and slide it upon us straight away with the slide-guitar intro’d rocker ‘Saving Me’ and it just keeps getting better.

Highlights include the gutsy addictively riffed ‘Helldriver’ or the great bluesy rockin’ ‘Rock Ready’ & ‘the closer ‘Stranger In Town’ as great examples on how fine an album it is.

8/10

ANNOUNCED TODAY - UFO's Rock Bottom to appear in new action video game

Brutal Legend™

From the mind of Tim Schafer comes the ultimate heavy metal action game starring Jack Black. You are heavy metal roadie Eddie, Riggs, hurled back in time to the mythical Age of Metal when the world was formed and ruled by the power of Rock.

PRESS RELEASE:

DOUBLE FINE AND EA ANNOUNCE SUPER-CHARGED SOUNDTRACK FOR BRUTAL LEGEND™
Metal’s Biggest Artists Provide Soundtrack for the Ultimate Skull-Crushing Demon-Slaying Adventure
Guildford, UK – August 10, 2009

Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) and Double Fine Productions, Inc. today announced the complete soundtrack for Brutal Legend™, the face-melting action video game from Tim Schafer starring Jack Black as the roadie Eddie Riggs. Boasting an impressive list of more than 100 fist-pumping tracks sure to make your blood boil, Brütal Legend puts metal’s most celebrated rock gods in the forefront of this unique third-person action experience. With a total of 75 killer bands showcased, including legends such as Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Megadeth and Motörhead, Brütal Legend will unleash the inner headbanger in every gamer on October 16.

Brütal Legend is an epic action game from visionary developer Tim Schafer. Jack Black stars as Eddie Riggs, a legendary roadie summoned to a world of Heavy Metal where mountains are made of amplifiers, killer spiders spin guitar strings and Rock Legends roam the landscape. As Eddie you crush skulls with a battle axe, ravage the road in a super-charged Hot Rod and unleash the power of Rock to reign down fire from the sky – all to save humanity and become a Brütal Legend.

”This soundtrack took years to put together as we wanted to represent every genre of Metal, and also have the perfect music for every epic moment in the game,” said Tim Schafer, President of Double Fine Productions. “It’s designed to be loved by Metal fans, and for those who are not, it will either convert them or make their heads explode… or both.”
“It would be a grave disservice to merely use the term ‘Ultimate Heavy Metal Soundtrack’ here,” said Steve Schnur, Worldwide Executive of Music and Music Marketing for Electronics Arts. “Instead, what we’ve unleashed is without question the most mind-blasting, face-melting, skull-shattering alliance of Classic Metal, Thrash Metal, New Wave, British Metal, Black Metal, Power Metal, Doom Metal, Death Metal, Hair Metal, Goth Metal and Industrial Metal ever decreed by The Gods Of Metal. Its very existence will condemn your soul to eternal brütal damnation. Yes, it’s that good.”

Top 100 British Albums

UFO's 'The Visitor' entered the Top 100 UK's Album Charts at Number 99 and Number 4 in the Top British Rock Albums!!!

This is the first UFO album to chart since Misdemeanor, which is an amazing feat when you consider the lack of mainstream publicity given to UFO. Due to the active web presence the band now have (This website, The Official UFO website and various band member websites) as well as completing a UK tour, this shows that the message is being heard loud and clear. The website reviews have been amazing, I have published and linked to over 50 reviews from this website with more on Amazon etc etc. All really great news for the band and their fans.

Here then is a selection of the Top 100 British Albums, with UFO at #99

On the amazon.com site (US) The Visitor is still hovering around the 500th best selling product mark, which doesn't sound impressive until you look at the Magnum album released at the same time (36,000th) and Saxon released in January (18,000th).

Interestingly the album seems to sell more on the US Amazon site (in term of their product sales ratings) than the UK. All in all the band must ship a lot of product (if you accept Amazon as a representative sample) because they sell reasonably well all over the world.

Please note that Ranking on Amazon is done hourly

I would like to thank Peter Ford for the information and links - Cheers Peter

Rushonrock Rider – Andy Parker

Riding high on the back of rave reviews for new album The Visitor, legendary stix man Andy Parker may be missing buddy Pete Way but he never misses a beat.
And while the UFO drummer’s energy is well known to rock fans everywhere it’s difficult to imagine the tub thumper kicking back and chilling out. But Andy enjoys his downtime like the rest of us and the latest rushonrock Rider sees more of rock’s behind-the-scenes secrets revealed…

On your iPod: Right now, I’m listening to Vinnie Moore’s solo album. Of course, I am biased but I couldn’t recommend it more highly. Vinnie’s given UFO a new lease of life since he joined us and all our fans know what a wonderfully talented guitarist he is. But there are so many sides, or perhaps I should say levels, to Vinnie and his new studio album provides further proof what a supreme musician he is.

Small screen pleasure: I don’t watch a lot of television especially in years when we’re on the road so much but I do love 24 and make sure I never miss an episode, even though it means I’m playing catch-up all the time

Making A Meal Of It: I love any food that’s not the rubbish you eat on the road.

Drivetime: I’m the proud owner of a Dodge Ram 2500 pick-up. It’s my pride and joy – you can’t beat a Cummins engine.

Ace Place: Such a wide-ranging question that it’s almost impossible to answer. Best pub? Best restaurant? Best hotel? Best city? Best country? I enjoy life and realise how lucky I’ve been to experience such a varied one, travelling to places I could only have dreamt about as a kid. I try to take it all in, whether it’s a breathtaking view across the Pacific, a mountain range or even an unimposing concert venue stuck away in a an unloved corner of town.

Dream Destination: That’s an easy answer. I’d love to go to New Zealand, a) because I’ve never been there, b) because I want to go there but most importantly c) because I need to go there. You see my sister’s been living there for the past 20 years and I’ve always promised I’d pay her a visit.

Nickname Shame: Fill in your own…

Finally Barry Sparks has just issued an on-the-road update on his website

"Hello! I am in Europe right now. Just did a few gigs with Dokken in Madrid, Bulgaria and also three shows supporting WHITESNAKE in Norway. All these went really well. Bulgaria was cool because it was our first time there, a lot of Rock fans and we had a great gig. The shows in Norway were fun as well; the only bummer was it rained like crazy the whole time! But even that couldn’t stop us!

I am currently touring Europe with UFO. I am once again filling in for Pete Way, who is unable to do the tour. So far the gigs are going great! UFO has always been one of my favourite bands so its an honor for me to be able to help them out. I am also very excited to be playing alongside drummer Andy Parker, always a favourite of mine.

I would like to say thank you to Tec-Amps for helping out on this tour with some great sounding bass amps! Also S.I.T strings, Dean Markley and of course my number one white Sparks bass is holding up very well after night after night of constant abuse! A DVD of last years B'Z tour called Glory Days is out in Japan. It was recorded at the last gig at Yokohama stadium in the pouring rain! It captures just how huge and amazing these big shows were."

Appearing on a Japanese blogsite, a comment regarding 'The Visitor'. (Translated from Japanese)

Picture this; Traditional rock music that could hardly sound more classic, with gritty hooks, powerful riffs and leads, and lyrics full of eccentric humor, as well as a talent for observation and occasionally great depth. This is truly the case with UFO's newest release, 'The Visitor'. Due to the lineup of Mogg, Vinnie Moore, Andy Parker and Paul Raymond, it's no surprise that 'The Visitor' features the same musicality and energy which UFO fans have come to cherish from the band.

SPANISH BLOG:

This is a gem!! the new album by UFO, three years after The Monkey Puzzle.

Is available in LP, or CD digipack edition containing a bonus.

Later this year began the U.S. tour. Bassist Pete Way is currently part of the group by liver problems, I do not know if this is final or is supposed to be one to recover the rest of the group.

The Visitor is just excellent, is the fourth studio album with Vinnie Moore on guitar. And I can say that, fortunately, and as seen in The Monkey Puzzle, the group has left behind any kind of experimentation and has definitely taken the path of Rock and Hard Rock bluesero that has been their symbol of identity from records like Phenomenon.

When we talk about topics such as Saving Me, On The Waterfront, Hell Driver or excellent Living Proof're talking about good news for fans of the group.

Moog demonstrates that Phil has not forgotten to sing. And most importantly we enjoy, in the end, Vinnie Moore of a fully integrated within the group, which has managed to incorporate the sound of taps needed UFO essence, an ingredient that had been lacking until now and that makes The Visitor is a listening experience much more complete.

The guitar is exactly what Moore highlights on this record, as reflected in items such as Hell Driver, Rock Ready or which for me is the best item on the disc, Can not Buy A Thrill.

A handful of good solos, charisma in the vocal lines and solid compositions for the genre is what they offer in this new UFO album. A work of something more than forty minutes that counts, as usual, with a cover and with a peculiar production of the first level.

I would like to conclude without referring to the theme Stop Breaking Down, a topic that brings together all the details perfectly sound UFO and certainly not missing in the concerts of the group.
It would also be a perfect single. It seems out of time Mechanix.

Certainly for me, UFO is my favorite groups and I always make reference to their previous albums because I enjoyed them all.

Brief Review from France

Enthusiasm and dynamism could really be the right words to sum up the way this new album of British Rock legend UFO sounds like: awesome if you prefer !! :) “The Visitor” seems to be performed by a young band full of energy and at the same time is to be heard on the 10 songs the experience, the musical and vocal maturity the years have brought; and last but not least the strong, united line-up UFO consists of is the key of the new album: I mean it’s clear that the whole band took a lot of great time and pleasure with the new opus... UFO
The Visitor
SPV Records

Thanks go to MetalDen for the translation from French into English

UFO is a band that all metallers know but not really know. We've all seen the logo of the group but never really paid attention to their music, we know that Michael Schenker played often with them but no more. We know that this band has had a major influence pn Metallica and Megadeth, Iron Maiden has already opened for them, but that's all!

A few years ago when I worked for CDs shop with a name of three letters, I had the opportunity to discuss with a customer who wanted to hear an album of the band in the shop listening place. After him, I started to listen the same whole album to satisfy my musical curiosity, expecting to hear pure metal , what was my surprise to come across a great blues rock quality totally spectacular! This week, I open my mailbox, I open the envelope in it and I see this presentation of the latest CD entitled UFO : The Visitor. I put it in my player

I liked it immediately with the first riff, very bluesy but damn awesome! I just remember the most interesting comparisons with Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Black Crowes, Deep Purple, Ian Moore or Derek Trucks Band for the virtuosity. Not very metal, you see? The old albums were more rock, but it seems that the band is now more comfortable with blues and rock and it's better.

For the guitar, it is Vinnie Moore (who is with UFO since 2004) and of course, he makes the guitar sing on all parts of the album. The Visitor is pleasant, charming and heartwarming. Pure blues rock , if you want metal metal, you do not ring at the right door!

Here is the first full review of 'The Visitor'

UFO The Visitor

SPV USA

I have been critical of UFO when they released their first Schenkerless album You Are Here. The issue wasn’t that Schenker was not in the mix, it was simply not a great album. Things just weren’t jelling at that point, the addition of Vinnie Moore and Jason Bonham were without a great moves. On The Monkey Puzzle thing were much improved and the album came together; the music was better, the band sounded tighter and Phil Mogg continued to amaze.

This brings us to the latest album The Visitor the third release of this incarnation of UFO. It should be noted that Bonham left to pursue gigs with Foreigner and the short lived Zeppelin reunion. Enter longtime UFO drummer Andy Parker to fill the void. It should be noted that Pete Way didn’t play a note on this album; he has taken a sabbatical from UFO to address his health. The Visitor is the album that challenges the rejuvenated Deep Purple as the best band to rise from the ashes after the loss of a key member of the band. Phil Mogg sounds phenomenal, there are guys like Steven Tyler, Mick Jagger and Roger Daltry who get all of the accolades…I’ll tell you this; they can’t hold a candle to Phil Mogg who can still sing like he did back in the day. There is a certain level of elegance, class and sophistication that UFO has that truly makes them classic rock.

Vinnie Moore steals the show with unforgettable riffs and solos as heard on standouts; “Saving Me,” “Hell Driver,” “Living Proof” and “Rock Ready.” I was reluctant about this incarnation of UFO when I heard the debut, but after seeing them live on their previous tour and hearing The Monkey Puzzle and now The Visitor, there is no doubt that UFO have gotten their second, third or is it their fourth wind? The only thing that could be better is if Pete Way were there, let’s wish him good health so he can join Phil and Co. soon.

Following the Eddie Trunk Posting (April 24th below), Eddie has issued the following News item:

"Premiered new UFO Friday night. Sounds real good. One of the great melodic hard rock bands of all time is back with The Visitor on June 2nd. Vinnie Moore continues to be the perfect fit for this band on guitar. Tasty melodic playing all over it! Vinnie also has his own solo instrumental CD you should check out called 'To The Core'. Get well soon Pete Way, he always missed when not a part of UFO, still, new CD sounds strong"

Vinnie Moore - To The Core

Vinnie Moore has posted details of his long anticipated solo album, 'To The Core'.

---

February 18th 2009

SPV issued a PRESS RELEASE today and immeditely the internet NEWS sites were flooded with the following:

NEW STUDIO ALBUM titled "The Visitor"

British rock legends UFO will release their brand-new studio album, "The Visitor", in late May/early June via SPV/Steamhammer. UFO composed more than 35 new tracks in the run-up to the recordings, 13 of which were short-listed and produced at the studio. 11 of these songs are expected to make it onto the regular album, while the other two are scheduled to become bonus tracks on the limited-edition digipack. The current lineup continues to consist of the three original members, Phil Mogg (vocals), Paul Raymond (guitar, keyboards), and Andy Parker (drums), as well as American world-class guitarist Vinnie Moore. Bass legend and original member Pete Way is currently suffering from a liver disease and was unfortunately not available for the studio production."All those who have been into UFO for a long time will find all our characteristic trademarks on 'The Visitor', and anybody new to the band will be impressed by our enthusiasm and dynamism," frontman Phil Mogg enthuses on the subject of the new songs. "The Visitor" sees the band benefiting especially from their collaboration with Vinnie Moore, who joined UFO in autumn 2003 and has made an excellent impression on the albums "You Are Here" (2004) and "The Monkey Puzzle" (2006), and on the band’s tours. Mogg says,"Without running down previous UFO lineups, it's been a long time since we had a team as strong as this one. Vinnie contributes his youthful energy and amazing guitar technique, and in Andy's return we've seen the reappearance of a musician who has always been very important to the band's original sound.

"The band will embark on a major world tour this year. Concert dates will be announced soon, and appearances at the Rock Hard festival at the end of May and the Wacken Open Air at the beginning of August 2009 in Germany have been confirmed.

Release dates for "The Visitor":

Germany, Austria, Switzerland: May 29
Rest of Europe: June 2
USA, Canada: June 2

Paul Raymond has posted a brief update in his 'Guestbook' section

Hi Guys

Sorry for the prolonged silence. I've just been in Germany laying the basic tracks down for the new album. Now working in my local studio doing rhythm guitars & hammond organ - can't give too much away as the final choices for songs havent been made yet, but I hope to have 4 of my tracks included.
Regarding Pete - he has not been well for some time, our past excesses have caught up with all of us in one way or another but more so with Pete. He is getting treatment for a serious liver complaint and hopefully in time he will recover - its going to take a complete lifestyle change and only time will tell if Pete can be strong enough to do that.

Once I've got a bit more time on my hands I'll give you a more in-depth update. Cheers,

Paul

UFO Official Announcement

News Update 2nd February 2008

2009 is shaping up to be a busy time for UFO, what with the studio sessions in Germany (where we're recording the new album, due out later this year), and also the forthcoming tours and festival shows which are being booked right now.

But amidst all the good news, we also need to share some other news with you.

For a while now, Pete has been dealing with a medical condition which affects his liver, and he's currently undergoing treatment to cure it. The medication he's on makes him tired and dizzy, and he feels that taking part in the recording sessions and the hectic touring schedule would be too much for him at the moment, so he'll be taking some time out from UFO until he is match-fit.

But as we all know with Pete, he won't be able to stay away from rocknroll for long - so it's very likely that he'll be doing a few gigs here and there with Waysted.

We all wish him the very best and hope for a swift and full recovery.

We love ya Pete! Get well soon man.
