REVIEWERS' full selection

2012 ... what a year?! The Diamond Jubilee, The Olympics, The Leveson Enquiry...But was it any good for music?

Our intrepid band of reviewers have spent the year listening and learning and now it's show and tell as they weigh up their favourites.

Our listing shows the complete diversity of view this year, making overall Top 5 placings for albums and gigs especially hard!  So a diverse year, maybe, but with little consensus on what constituted a really great album or gig...

Top 5 Albums

1.  MARILLION Sounds That Can't Be Made

Epic, powerful, emotional and packed full of lengthy numbers that do not extend their welcome, back to the glory days of 'Brave' and 'Marbles'. Includes some of Steve Rothery's best and heaviest guitar work for years

2.  RICHARD HAWLEY Standing At The Sky's Edge

In terms of scope, breadth and mood, this is probably Hawley's most ambitious collection yet. And he pulls it off. Crescendos of sound and spiralling guitars are counterpointed with angelic choirs and miserable observation. Great stuff.

3.  SHINEDOWN Amaryllis

Modern rockers who have an ear for melody and a love of big riffs. I’d be amazed if this album didn’t make most year-end lists.

4.  WALTER TROUT Blues For The Modern Daze

Great to see Walter getting back to what he does best following a couple of ill-advised forays into more contemporary rock fare with 'The Outsider' and the very ordinary 'Common Ground'. BFTMD does what it says on the tin and delivers in spades the hard-edged blues that he's known (and loved) for with peerless, stinging fretwork throughout.

5.  UFO Seven Deadly

UFO Seven Deadly (SPV) - Every track a winner - UFO tour the UK in February 2013 ©2012 Noel Buckley (Chief Photographer)

On Seven Deadly, the songwriting is consistently high, Mogg's voice has found a new plateau and guitarist Vinnie Moore might just be starting to fulfil his potential.

You can cast your own vote from 17 December to influence the final selection of Top 5 albums VOTE HERE

"The Best of 2012" is featured on Get Ready to ROCK! Radio on Sunday 30 December, 22:00 (repeated Friday 6 January and Sunday 8 January, 22:00)

We'll be giving away a selection of albums as part of this show.  Listen in to win!

CONCERT REPORT - 1st December 2012 - Marquee 15 - Corona - CA

The last night of the USA live tour

UFO at Marquee 15 in Corona, California on December 1, 2012. Having been a fan of UFO since the late 70's, it was strange to realize that UFO and myself had never been in the same venue at the same time. I decided to rectify that situation by seeing the boys belt out the classics as well as some stuff off their BRILLIANT new cd, Seven Deadly! Having previously seen the band that was direct support to UFO on this evening and being completely underwhelmed by them, I decided to arrive at the venue shortly before UFO were to go on. The Marquee 15 was as full as I've ever seen it! I saw some of the "smaller" women being hoisted overhead and essentialy "crowd surfing" in order to get to the restrooms! The crowd seemed more than ready for UFO to get started. As UFO was introduced, everyone was on their feet and a roar of approval was presented to the band. A few quick comments from Phil and then it was,"Mr. Parker". They tore into Lights Out. Pretty ballsy move to start with one of your biggest hits but they had the mother of all setlists waiting for us. Phil commented that there were some sound issues on Lights Out which were evident but they seemed to correct them because they proceeded to go through some of the "new classics" like Wonderland, Fight Night, Burn Your House Down & Mojo Town as well as the "old classics" and the sound was as good as any show I've ever attended. UFO had the crowd eating out of their hands so to speak. The crowd consisted of some 20-somethings as well as lots of 40 & 50-somethings and let me tell you...THEY WERE LOUD!!! The roar from the crowd never stopped. As I listen back to my recordings of the show you can here the crowd just going nuts...non stop. At times, Phil would stop to tell a joke or a story, ever the front man. If the band took more than a few seconds between songs, the chant of U-F-O would start...THIS CROWD WAS PUMPED! All the players were in top form I must say. Can Phil's vocals really be getting better with age? I thought he was perfect, I couldn't have expected better. Paul, Andy & Rob were energetic, animated and seemed to be having a blast. Vinnie...I've been a fan of Vinnie since 1986. I was excited to see him become a member of UFO but was unsure how he would fit initially. No need to worry! Seven Deadly is as good an UFO cd as there is in my humble opinion and I was thrilled to see them play some of those songs live. Vinnie was spot on all night. He seemed inspired and appeared to be having a great time on stage. Trying to shoot stills of him was extremely difficult as the guy is ALWAYS on the move. He sounded awesome and during the "old classics", he paid the appropriate amount of homage to Michael's work but still put his mark on them. I'm sure he earned a lot of respect this night and gained some fans....a class act. There seemed to be some issue with doing Cherri at about the mid show point...don't know what but they decided not to do it. So, they finished the show with it and it was the best version of that song I've ever heard. They definitely moved it UP on my list of favorite UFO songs! In summary, the band were top notch. I was so impressed. The crowd was wild (bunch of damn crazy old people!) which made it difficult to shoot stills and video but hey I'll take it! Glad to see the boys can still whip 'em into a frenzy! If you get half a chance to go see them GO!!!

Very interesting interview with Andy Parker, speaking about the ban, the latest album release
and all about 'wanting his monkey back'

“Wonderland” follows in a similar pattern, but what is the world is Phil singing about? I mean what is it about wanting his monkey back?
(Laughter) That’s a million dollar question, isn’t it? You’re asking the wrong person, but he did tell me that he saw a story somewhere about this bar where they had a monkey, a pet monkey. And the monkey turned violent, and tore somebody’s hair off or something like that. So, somebody had to come for the monkey I guess, and take the monkey away. I think that’s the story behind it.

Co-hosts of VH1's "That Metal Show", Eddie Trunk and Don Jamieson, were both introduced by a master of ceremony. Trunk mentioned he had flown over 3,000 miles just to see UFO. Jamieson went onto say how much love Trunk had for them. Jamieson mentioned it was his first time seeing the band perform. Trunk followed up by thanking everyone for their support of their television and radio show.

UFO invaded Key Club.

oduced UFO, they arrived on stage. After everyone's cheers, Mogg went onto say it was one of the most expensive introductions they have had yet. Then, he joked of an alternate method for the next time and the crowd laughed. "Lights Out" was performed, shortly after.

"Love to Love" seemed to have received the most love, during UFO's performance. Shortly after Mogg's introduction, the crowd cheered and went onto sing along with him. As De Luca entertained by hovering over the front row, as hands reached for his bass.

During "Too Hot To Handle", a female audience grabbed the shoulders of two members of those in the front row and managed to make her way onto the stage. She was quickly apprehended, as UFO continued on.

De Luca started "Rock Bottom" with a solo, as the rest of UFO soon followed. As Mogg sang the title, he clapped his hands above his head and the spectators applauded with him. Then, they sang the song's title during each chorus.

As UFO left the stage after "Rock Bottom", audience members chanted UFO's name several times for an encore. They ended their concert with "Doctor Doctor" and "Shoot Shoot". Mogg thanked everyone for attending as they handed set lists and guitar picks to those they could reach.

"Mother Mary", "Fright Night", "Wonderland", "Cherry", "Let It Roll", "Mojo Town", "Burn Your House Down", "Only You Can Rock Me", "Hell Driver" and "Venus" were also part of UFO's set.

Caught UFO at Key Club with my TMS partner Don Jamieson and Tom Morello. Great hang and a great show. Tom was so into it he even left our seats in the VIP and joined me on the floor for the second half of the show. A truly rocking night for sure and the band was in top form. Vinnie Moore is just unreal, you gotta see him wail on old UFO and his own stuff. They will be back for E Coast US dates next year. 2 more W Coast dates including Vegas tonight before they return to the UK. Just amazing songs and Phil Mogg and the whole band sounded great. I thank them for letting me intro them, always a great honor being the super fan I am.

REVIEW: UFO at The Canyon

UFO is undoubtedly one of the most underrated, yet influential rock bands, and while it may never receive 20 million ticket requests for its concerts, as Led Zeppelin did back in 2007, if it’s still recording relevant new material and crossing oceans to play small gigs to satiate American demand...
...UFO is more worthy of our respect now than ever.

Paul Raymond to release a new solo album titled "Terms and Conditions Apply" early next year

NEW PAUL RAYMOND PROJECT ALBUM: Due for release on 28th January 2013

Paul Raymond, songwriter, keyboardist and rhythm guitarist of legendary cult hard rock outfit UFO has inked a deal with Cherry Red Records’ new hard rock imprint label Hear No Evil for his new solo album with The Paul Raymond Project.

The new album, entitled “Terms & Conditions Apply” is set for a worldwide release on January 28, 2013.   It will mark the sixth release by the group and features a guest appearance from Michael Schenker (MSG, UFO, Scorpions) on a cover of ‘Reach Out (I’ll Be There)’ and by Reuben Archer (Stampede, Wild Horses, Lionheart, Lautrec) on ‘Love Is Blind’.

Paul Raymond is set to play some select regional solo UK shows to promote “Terms & Conditions Apply” in the New Year, including a special headline launch show at London’s Borderline venue on Friday 1st February, before resuming his duties touring with UFO.  The shows will feature Stampede vocalist Reuben Archer amongst other special guests and will showcase the new material as well as UFO classics. Regional dates are yet TBA.

Paul Raymond is primarily best known for his work in UFO, having joined the band’s ranks in 1976. Beginning with “Lights Out” in 1977, to date Paul has appeared on 11 UFO albums, including the incendiary double live “Strangers In the Night”.  In a varied career, he’s also been a key member in a number of acts, including 70s legends Savoy Brown, Chicken Shack, Michael Schenker Group and Waysted.

The Paul Raymond Project (PRP) was first formed in 1989 in Japan featuring original lineup of Frank Di Mino (formerly of Angel) on lead vocals and Masoyoshi Yamashitu (Loudness) on bass.  Paul spent 1990 writing new material, inspired by the resurgence of straight-ahead blues/rock led by bands such as the Black Crowes and the Quireboys, until, joined by guitarist Andy Simmons, the third incarnation of the project released “Man on a Mission” through Zoom Club records.  It was to be nine years before Paul and Andy joined forces again and recorded “Virtual Insanity” as UFO had once again intervened. In 2010, together with bass player Mark Coles and drummer Tony Steel, they began working on “Terms & Conditions Apply”.

Almost a year and a half exactly to the day of their last visit to Chicago, UFO returned to the House of Blues to kick off another tour. Since their last visit they released a new album and this time out they had a different bass player. ..

... Just like last time, long-time Chicago rock DJ Byrd (now no longer at WLUP) came out and introduced UFO. When the curtains parted the band was all on stage and they opened with one of their classic hits, "Lights Out" and the crowd was full of bobbing heads and cheers. The band sounded flawless and Phil's voice sounded as good as ever. The two guitar delivery of Vinnie Moore and Paul Raymond made for a really full sound and both of them are very skilled players with Paul also handling all keyboard duties. They quickly followed with "Mother Mary" which was another old favorite and it sounded every bit as good as the previous song.

The band stopped playing for a minute so Phil could talk to the crowd and he informed them that they'd now be playing some new songs. They started with "Fight Night" and "Wonderland" from their new album, Seven Deadly. They sounded even better live than they did on the album. From there they kept going with some new songs mixed in some old ones. No matter what they played the crowd was into it and heads never stopped bobbing around and many fans sang along to the choruses of their old favorites.

Legendary rockers UFO kick off
'Seven Deadly' North American tour this week

UFO is one of the most beloved and respected bands from the 1970s era of classic hard rock and metal. Fronted by dynamic vocalist Phil Mogg, backed by powerhouse drummer Andy Parker, and driven by guitarist/keyboardist Paul Raymond and guitar icon, Vinnie Moore, the band remains as addictive as ever.

Guitarist Moore commented on the upcoming tour:

"It's been quite a while since we've toured in the USA and I'm really looking forward to it. We have not played here since the new record came out and it's going to be exciting to play some of the new tunes. And it is always great to see our awesome fans!"

Since posting (9th July entry below) the 1971 Rock Festival Photo book, I have had a really great response -
there seems to be a real interest in the bands history alongside the current news/updates as 'Seven Deadly' has shown us,
with positive reviews from the album as wel as this years tour in the UK and Europe.

Special thanks to Harry Becker who, has sent me so much over the past weeks - I will be adding all this to the website in due course,

starting with a 1972 photo of UFO drummer, Andy Parker in Japan

UFO was absolutely fantastic last night in Bolwerk/ Sneek, all the bandmembers looked happy and they really enjoyed themselves. Stunning very long version of Shoot Shoot. At the end of the show Vinnie played the intro of Zepp's Whole Lotta Love and Andy fill in after a few seconds. Absolutely Fun!!
Took my 13 years old son to the gig. The boys were very friendly to him. Andy give him a drumstick and Vinnie give him a plectrum, even met Batttttty - the sweetest woman on earth. Hope I find some time to write a review in the next couple of days - Peter

Seven Deadly REVIEW

"I get a similar level of excitement taking in songs like “Steal Yourself”
and “Year Of The Gun” that I did when first hearing “Force It” and “Obsession” from the band.
“Seven Deadly” doesn’t reinvent the UFO wheel - it merely promises a series of well-crafted, hook-oriented
arrangements with proper production and should be mandatory for all hard rock followers from 10 to 100."

UFO last Night at the in London

The sound was stunning, the band performed amazingly - A great way to finish off the UK 2012 leg of the tour.

The audience were enthusiastic and gave the band a great welcome, including the DragonForce Guitarist - Herman Li - (in a interview published in
'Metal Hammer' magazine that Vinnie Moore as one of his favourite guitarists as well as having most influenced his guitar playing) and Gus G. (Ozzy/Firewind)

I should have taken more photos, but I enjoyed the concert so much that the time flew by - besides thee were so many professional photographers,
so looking forward to seeing the Pro Shots - however HERE are the few I did take

HIGHLIGHTS of this tour - The inclusion of four 'Seven Deadly' songs, bassist Rob De Luca, the vibe on stage with all muscians clearly having fun especially the 'Mun Kay' show in Brighton - hilarious - WONDERLAND

The band hit the road again later this month (26th April), starting in Prague, so will keep you posted on the progress.

Album Review from Greece

2nd April 2012

LAST NIGHT: The Brook, Southampton

I caught up with UFO last night in Southampton, the 'Home of the British Navy' as Phil informed the audience. It was also 100 years almost to the day that the Titanic set sail from the Southampton docks - The rest is History - The show was without doubt this was one of the best shows that I have attended. The inclusion of the four new songs from Seven Deadly made it so - "Fight Night', "Wonderland", "Mojo Town" and "Burn Your House Down" all sat comfortably alongside the classics, highlighting just how great UFO is live.

This was the first tine that I had seen Rob De Luca play with the band and I was totally knocked out by his playing, his interaction with the other band members on stage and just how he immersed himself in every track - It felt right to see him with UFO - You guys have got to go and see this line-up play this set.

Rob with UFO on the Mosters of Rock Cruise

Other highlights for me was Venus, Helldriver , 'Love to Love' and and the storming 'Rock Bottom' - Stunning Set.

Phil is such a great front-man - His humour always strikes a chord with us Brits - and the banter between him and the crowd makes the show relaxed and fun.
His vocals performance never dissapoints - A legend.

Andy Parker played a storming set, briming with energy and panache - such a great musician, the powerhouse of the band.

Vinnie Moore as ever, played out of this world, along with Paul Raymond, who's keyboard work and rhythm guitar gives UFO that unique sound.

I would just love for this whole tour to be caught on DVD - UFO are firing on all cylinders and this needs to be captured - 11/10

TONIGHT - Waterfront - Norwich

LAST NIGHT: Another NEW SONG added to the set list

MOJO TOWN performed live, making this the fourth song from 'Seven Deadly' to be included - the first three tracks from the album + 'Burn Your House Down'

The songs are so strong that it seems a corner has been turned, the only criticism that surfaces from time to time is the lack of new
material being played live but having four new songs from the album means that the third of the set is fresh - Perfect

26th March 2012

I was planning on attending the Milton Keynes gig o nFriday but sadly got the 'Man Flu' - you know what we guys are like with that!!
but it knocked me sideways for the full weekend - hence the lack of posting over the past two or three days - What a time I missed by all accounts
and [s-i-t-n] member Paul Alex, cheered me up no end with his UFO Official Guestbook entry:

"They were majestic. A funny venue for a rock n roll band, all seater local venue, but they tore it up from start to finish. Great set, great sound and great atmosphere made for a special night. You all know the set, the new 3 sitting very comfortably in a really well balanced set. Phil and Vinnie in full flow and sharing some light hearted moments, Vinnie sitting on some poor sod and Phil taking Wolfie's front row seat "to see what they (the band) look like" leading to some knockabout banter with Andy taking a full part.

To cap a great evening, a few of us old stagers waiting outside were invited in and after 32 years loyal service finally met the guys. Brilliant, brilliant evening - Paul"

What a gig to miss!! - I have 'retrospectively' put together the daily postings, that I missed over the weekend (24th/25th) below

54 minutes with … Phil Mogg: 'By the time we reached the gig no one could talk'

The frontman for hard rock stalwarts UFO on playing his promoters at football, meeting fans in the dole queue and the ubiquity of 'heavy snow'

High-flying … UFO in their heyday, with Phil Mogg at the rear. Photograph: Paul Cox/London Features

You've been UFO's singer for more than 40 years now. What's it like being the singer in a hard rock band once you reach your 60s?

It's not as much fun. Travelling's a pain now. When you start, you're full of excitement and prepared to go anywhere, and you're not very interested in money – getting paid doesn't really matter as long as you're doing the gig. Whereas now it's: are we getting paid? How much are we getting paid? Because in the mid-80s I ended up completely skint.

Were you screwed on the contracts, in time-honoured 70s-rock-band fashion?

We screwed ourselves. Because it was fun.

The minute the money came in, it went out again?

Yeah. In the early 80s, we did four nights at Hammersmith (1). Nine months after that when everything fell apart, I ended up having to go to the dole office. I'd never been before. There was a bloke in front of me in the queue. He looked and said: "Aren't you with UFO?" I said: "Yeah." I was already very embarrassed going there. He said: "What are you doing here?" I said: "Same as you. I need some money." I was absolutely brassic. At the same point I ended up sleeping round a friend of mine's because I was so skint. That's when you think: "Shouldn't I have some sort of a royalty?" A lot of that was us doing albums we thought somebody else paid for. Then when you look into it you realise all that studio time, we were actually paying for. Nobody on management had taken the time to explain to the band: "No, you're paying for it." Which was stupid on our part.

In old interviews with you, there are copious references to cocaine (2). Is that where the money went?

It was very popular in that time. We must have done a lot for Peru! The thing with bands is that every night is like a party night, so you never have the chance to get over the hangover you had before, so you continue that cycle. There's no time for recuperating and there was no one there to say: "Don't you think it would be a good idea if you stopped this?" That sort of realisation doesn't kick in until you reach rock bottom. Mid-80s I went to see a doctor in Notting Hill Gate. I says [Mogg holds up his hand and makes it wobble]: "I think there's something wrong with me." He says: "Mr Mogg, what are you drinking?" I says, "Beer, some wine, maybe later in the evening some spirits," He says: "Tut tut tut. Mr Mogg, you must monitor yourself." I've never forgotten that.

So, you were drinking and snorting your way around the world. How did you manage to play gig after gig after gig after gig, then?

The band was pretty physically fit. On the early German tours we'd bet the promoter the gig money for a game of football in the afternoon (3) – which we'd win. So we'd have a five-a-side, then we'd start the party early, then we'd do the gig. We'd get up next morning and get straight back into it. There weren't any slouchers in the band.

Did you ever think, when UFO were selling out arenas, "I've stopped being a jobbing musician. I'm now a rock star"?

I don't think we ever thought of ourselves as rock stars. We were just a bunch of blokes playing in a band and getting to a reasonably successful level. Mind you, a couple of members thought they were rock stars. But they didn't last long. (4)

You always saw yourself as a "people's band", did you?

Oh, absolutely. Once you lose touch with your audience or start taking it for granted you're really screwed. That goes for overdoing drinking and drugs. An audience can normally sniff you out if you've gone fake. That's why we never had limos.

What was the worst gig you ever played?

I know what that is. A real dark one. We was doing a concert with April Wine (5), and the following day we had another one with Fleetwood Mac in San Bernardino – this is the late 70s, just starting to kiss the 80s – and we'd run out of something or other (6). Our bus driver called another guy who was driving to the gig with April Wine. He said he had certain substances, and we should meet at the next truck stop. So we got there, and this guy comes along with a briefcase, chock a block with stuff. "Oh, this is great," we said. And it was a bit like one of those movie scenes where they chop out a line that goes from here to next week. In our bravado, we were: "Yeah!" But by the time we reached the gig no one could talk. We were absolutely rigid. Time to come on, and we couldn't move. We were onstage, absolutely stationary. I was going [Mogg sings expressionlessly through side of mouth, the rest of his face unmoving]: "Rock bottom, rock bottom". It was one of those where you think: "I ain't doing that again."

So This Is Spinal Tap isn't altogether unfamiliar to you?

We did a gig where we got lost, in one of those arenas. Nobody knew the way to the stage. The tour manager didn't even know. The tour manager at that point was a Liverpool guy called John, God bless him, who was extremely funny. John, during that period, would have all the gig money in a suitcase. Then he'd go and get a hooker. The next morning we'd be asking if he had the gig money. "No, I fell asleep. She's nicked all the fucking money." So you're stuck with no money, and you have to phone the agent to get them to send some money out. Very Spinal Tap.

Did you get bitter in the 80s as your star faded and pop-metal took over the world?

That's the breaks. It never bothered me. Didn't seem to bother the band. It's about being happy with what you've got – I won't go into Buddhism now – but I don't think envy ever came into it. I didn't particularly like all that stuff anyway.

The guitarist most fans associate with UFO is Michael Schenker (7). Is he as, well, unpredictable as he appears to be from reading about him?

Michael's on the wagon or off the wagon. He's not been drinking for about eight years, and whenever I've bumped into him he's been fine. Michael's fixated on knowing what he wants and anything else goes by the by – he's full of surprises. I remember Michael sharing a flat with me in Palmers Green when he first came over. And stealing the rabbit out of the back garden from a couple of doors down – they were fattening it up for Christmas. Then he moved along the road, and took the rabbit home because he wanted to spare it. He came round to mine and said: "The rabbit is shitting everywhere!" He didn't actually think that might happen.

With all that's under the bridge between the two of you, is it easy to forgive and forget?

You forget most stuff. You remember the good. The thing with Michael is that 90% of the time he'd come up with some stunning solos. Most of his solos contained melody – not just a load of notes for the sake of it. All the rest of it didn't really matter because his playing was so great.

It seems you were prone to saying unwise things onstage (8). Would that be fair?

It's basically cock-ups. You know when you say something and regret it immediately. The worst cock-up was doing one of those very leftwing colleges when we had a heckler at the front who heckled and heckled and heckled. And in the end we got him up on stage and gave him the mic, to give him his 10 minutes of chat. Then he went back down in the audience and continued to heckle. I got offstage, had a word with him. Well, it was more physical than that. But with that, the audience was against us. It was total mayhem. Bottles were flying, glasses, the lot. That's when you know you've overstepped. Never do that in Glasgow. That was an early lesson in where not to go and what not to say.

Is it difficult to be an age-appropriate hard rock singer, when so much of it is about aggressive sexual display?

You have to twist it around a little bit and make it not so in your face. I couldn't possibly wear skintight leather trousers now or light blue jeans, because your dick hangs out and it looks a bit embarrassing on an older person, if you see what I mean. There are certain things I wouldn't dream of doing anymore. (9)

Seven Deadly by UFO is out now on Steamhammer. They tour the UK until 4 April. Details:

(1) In the 1980s, all hard rock bands visting London played the Hammersmith Odeon (now the Apollo). Nowhere else. No one knows why.

(2) Some just comment on the amount of cocaine. Others try to be subtle, and make reference to "heavy snow" throughout the piece.

(3) It must be a metal thing. Iron Maiden can field a handy five-a-side team. Iron Maiden also play UFO's Doctor Doctor over the PA before their shows.

(4) UFO have been through 39 members, according to Wikipedia.

(5) They were Canadian. There's no reason for anyone other than fans of 70s hard rock to have heard of them.

(6) He doesn't mean wet wipes.

(7) Legendary German metal guitarist, who walked out of the band mid-tour in 1978, without warning anyone. Two popular versions of this story hold that he either ran off to join a Christian cult, or that he didn't speak good enough English to explain that he wanted to leave, so he just left. He returned to the band in 1995, and again walked out mid-tour. And again rejoined.

(8) Dedicating the song Lights Out to the Toxteth rioters in 1981; having a pop at the qualities of Detroit, onstage in Detroit.

(9) Should you wish to see heavy rock singer with no conception of age-appropriate behaviour, try David Coverdale of Whitesnake.

REVIEW: LAST NIGHT at the 02 Academy Leads

UFO Leeds O2 Academy Sunday 18 March 2012

Just back from tonight’s UFO gig at the O2 in Leeds. Man, they really turned it up to eleven tonight with an absolutely first rate performance. This was another one more time I’ve seen them over the years than I’ve had hot dinners and they do not disappoint. From Let it Roll all the way through to Shoot Shoot this was a band right on it for night on two hours.

The Heavy Metal Kids...
... get hold of an album to see what’s really what.

Just about 9pm it was time for the main event. Phil Mogg, Vinnie Moore, Andy Parker, Paul Raymond and Rob De Luca open it up with Let It Roll and it’s quite obvious that we’re all in for a good night. Phil sounds great and then we get two songs off the new offering Seven Deadly as Phil says there have been some “complaints” about not enough new stuff so it’s Fight Night and Wonderland next.

It’s a nice tight, powerful performance although after I’m a Loser and This Kids some of the crows stood near me start to whine that there are no “classics.” C’mon boys – UFO are not a band that has to trade on “classics” with enough bona fide other stuff to fill a dozen set lists and then some.

Saving Me proves that point and a fine rendition of Burn Your House Down (another off Seven Deadly) simply reinforces that. The new stuff sounding crisp and clean and right at home already...

UFO – “Seven Deadly” (Steamhammer/SPV)

Holy crap, these guys started in 1969 – making the band 43 years old, although the guys themselves are decidedly older! However, like a vintage wine, age has made them all the more reason to savor. Amazingly still with 3/4 of their classic line-up i.e. Phil Moog, Andy Parker, Paul Raymond, what is even more endearing about this seminal hard rock band is how the sound on this album has reverted to those early years, incorporating a blues feel on ‘Year Of The Gun’ that was very much that era along with bands like Deep Purple. Ever the ones to surprise people, these pensioners even manage to sound heavier on ‘Mojo Town’ than I remember on previous albums with all the band in fine form and Moog’s voice on ‘Fight Night’ sounding just like it did when I heard him on “Strangers In The Night” back in the 70s! Special mention goes to the ‘new’ kid Vinnie Moore, who has had some big shoes to fill be it in Michael Schenker and Tonka Chapman, but his guitar work on this album has been exemplary, incorporating elements of both these legends while defining himself in his own right, yet within that aforementioned UFO sound. With a flower power cover to boot, UFO have returned to their roots – now go wake the dead - copyright 2012

UfO - Seven Deadly - UFO return with another album of unreleased songs. Using the same formula as the previous album, "Seven Deadly" bet on a mix of hard rock, blues and southern rock. In the opening track, we have one of the highlights of the album, "Fight Night" picks up in the vein of a hardaco bursting with beautiful riffs and a grip more rhythmic with a strong rock and roll atmosphere in the air. "Wonderland" is a hard rock more punching, striking with a riff and a driven faster, showing that the guys are standing firm. In the wake of the album we have is a tour of the blues and southern rock with some hard tracks here and there, songs like "Mojo Town," "Year Of The Gun" and "The Last Stone Rider" were made to the bohemians of the rock and roll make their cold beers to the sound of great songs. We can not fail to mention the ballads "Steal Yourself" and "Angel Station", both with a bluesy air that permeates the entire disc. No doubt a great record that one of the greatest hard rock bands of the scene at all times, a highly recommended album! - HARD FOREVER

German Review - MyRevelations - 13/15 score for Seven Deadly

At first there was the camp of the fans of UFO already a bit skeptical about whether Vinnie Moore was the right man to succeed Michael Schenker to enter. But it was gone very quickly after the band released their first album in 2004 with the "new" also published and quickly scooped live in the new lineup. Since then, the new UFO simply represent diverse hard rock with heavy guitars. And it has also not changed in 2012 as the new fourth studio album this line-"Seven Deadly" shows that the boys at 24.02. have published.

"Seven Deadly" easy start with the cool mid-tempo riff effort "Fight Night". The catchy chorus and a melodic middle section to create a slight tension in the country feeling song. Vinnie thrilled with his soulful solo, which is designed to match the song more rock / blues. Then, dressed in "Wonderland," the pace a bit. Cool slide licks and the rather fast solo in which Vinnie varied and emotional pulls the leather properly, can sit up. In the following "Mojo Town," then beats the great hour of singer Phil Mogg. He sings in this song especially slow gloomy expressive, while he is on the whole album a very good voice.

Drummer Andy Parker provides together with the casual-sounding rhythm guitar for the right groove.
And then it goes on just as strong. The rather quiet "Angel Station" begins with acoustic guitars that run like a leitmotif through the piece. The yearning vocals shows that few can realize the feelings of the man on the street as Phil Mogg. Towards the end, the semi-ballad "Burn Your House Down" as a highlight of the album. By the expressive vocals, a dark atmosphere and the soulful guitar melodies that harmonize perfectly with the clean rhythm guitars, the song quickly found himself in the head. Then sounds of "Seven Deadly" with New "Fear" and the melodic "Waving Goodbye" pleasant.

UFO's with "Seven Deadly" again achieved a very strong album that touches the varied always soulful guitar work, the Crown. Vinne Moore and UFO that just fits. Parallel to the jewel case and digipak appear double vinyl, on which are two bonus tracks. Hopefully some of these songs make it into the setlist of the next tour in April / May is present with us already. Presence there is of course mandatory thing ...

German Newspaper...

...Neue Deister Zeitung from Hannover has a section BACKSTAGE

German Magazine 'Just For Kicks Music have given their verdict on tomorrows release:

Release date: 24.02.2012
UFO will be releasing ten brand new songs
on 24th of February and - we wont give away too much at this point -
by saying that this album includes several of the the strongest songs
the band has recorded ever. The over-impressive vocal performance of
the UFO front man come along with the fabulous compositions to be
found on Seven Deadly. The classic rock from "Burn Your House Down"
quotes all important UFO virtues and on "Going Down To Mojotown" the
protagonists rocking even harder, just to create a hyperlink (cross
reference) to their earlier days. How to create classic rock music
with an epic appeal UFO proofs with "Angel Station", while "Fight
Night" is the perfect live song (song for the stage). We don't have
to go into details when it comes down to the musical skills of the
original UFO musicians Paul Raymond and Andy Parker, their performance
is inspiring impeccable at the same time. But the outstanding guitar
work of Vinnie Moore requires a particular mentioning. The American
gives the songs with his catchy licks and dynamic riffs not only
expression and power, but his solos are rather in a league you can
only call world class! Whoever may doubt my words will be convinced
entirely upon release of the album

"...On this, album number four of the Vinnie Moore era, UFO have delivered yet another astounding, solid, classic Hard Rock record. With "Seven Deadly", the band has returned to their traditional Hard Rock roots, yet still retaining some of that bluesy edge they seem to have incorporated over the last few years....
...On "Seven Deadly", UFO have proved exactly why they are still going after all these years. The reason is simple. They still write great songs. This is classic Hard Rock at its purest, and should end up as another feather in the cap for UFO. A superlative effort from the perennial rockers"

Blues brothers

UFOs do not really need any introduction. They are one of the band's most prolific and respected British rock scene
(Steve Harris, to give one example, is an avid fan of them ever), yet they speak of their music with an enthusiasm
that seems to be to a group of kids.

Paul Raymond Interview with Greek Magazine 'rock overdose'

Greek Review | rock overdose - English Translation

Two more 'Seven Deadly' reviews:

Spanish Review | ROCK IN SPAIN - English Translation

Italian Review | METAL JOURNAL - English Translation - see below

UFO - Seven Deadly

UFOs are one of the largest in the world and on this I think there are big doubts. At the same time, I would say that they do not need excessive presentations, because they have done in music, both in the eyes of all. Since the late settana now, it's been over forty years, through thick and thin, the UK is however still on the scene, ready to bestow great music. This remarkable Seven Deadly, published for the Steamhammer / SPV, is their twenty-first studio work and arrive at a distance of about three years earlier by The visitor, hard altettanto discreet. The current lineup sees the legendary Phil Mog on vocals, the equally legendary Pete Way on bass, Andy Parker on drums, Paul Raymond on keyboards and Vinnie Moore excelled at guitar. From a musical standpoint, do not expect big news, but basically, it's not UFOs from a group like you would expect something innovative. This just to say that Seven Deadly is another great and honest album quesyo great historical group, where the good hard rock strictly English, which blends heavy traces of discrete, on the excellent test of Vinnie Moore, who in a certain sense in the disc itself is like a chapter in a book. His talent and his skill greatly enrich Seven Deadly, but this is not acting as a shadow that is the actual quality of the songs on the album. We are indeed faced with an album of great quality, with grains very intense and inspired, as well as compounds impeccably and honestly could not be otherwise. Certainly not an album that will rock history, a bit 'as has happened for the last jobs targati Deep Purple, but this does not count, because basically the UFO story have already written. What matters is that this band is still able to enchant with its carissma, with grit and with remarkable taste of still being able to write great music, quality of course, but also technically gifted. The impact is good, the grip is immediate and it is not obvious or predictable work, there is always that factor that hypnotizes you and that's what makes this band still immense. Also good production, attention to every detail. Great group and great record, what more could you want?

Rating: 8/10

As reported a few days ago, Lars Lehman is the mystery Bass Player on the Seven Deadly album

Lars has played for so many great bands and is an amazing muscian - Those of us who got to see Vinnie play
on his 2010 solo tour will know just how good the guy is, not just as a player but a terrific person to know.

The bassist on the forthcoming 'SEVEN DEADLY' tour will be Rob De Luca suggesting that UFO are keen not
to have a permanent bassist in the band and are keeping the door open for Pete Way, in the hope that his health will return

Hot off the Press, Andrew Bansal from Metal Assault
Interviews UFO Drummer Andy Parker Discusses New Album “Seven Deadly” (Audio)

"Classic hard rock legends UFO have been around for more than four decades, but even at this stage of their career, they continue to release new material at a prolific rate. Their latest album “Seven Deadly”, set to release in the US on February 28th, is solid proof of the fact that this group of musicians still has what it takes to write great music, music that shows their maturity, but largely satisfies their fans at the same time.

Just an hour or so ago, I had the pleasure of talking to drummer Andy Parker to discuss this album in detail, among other things including last year’s Hollywood show. Listen to the 18-minute conversation HERE, and for more info on the new album and tour dates, check out their official website" - Andrew Bansal

Drummer Robbie France Passes Away

Robbie France

Sad news as I learned that Robbie passed away last Saturday in Spain, he was only 52

Here is the report on UK's Classic Rock magazine website:

"Robbie France, who played with both UFO and Diamond Head, died on Saturday, January 14.

In a lengthy career, drummer France played on Diamond Head’s 1983 album Canterbury and spent a year with UFO from 1984. France was also a member of Wishbone Ash, recording the 1991 album Strange Affair. He was a founder-member of Skunk Anansie, playing on their 1995 debut album Paranoid And Sunburnt.

Last year, France (who was also a respected drum tutor) had first novel published. This was called Six Degrees South"

Robbie didn't often talk about his time within UFO but his respect for Phil was huge. Robbie was reported as saying,
"Phil was a monster! He could sing all day non stop, giving 120% of his considerable talent, go home, write more lyrics, sleep for a couple of hours and do the same the next day...and the day after. He's a one-off"

Paul Raymond also played with Robbie on the 13 date UK tour - Paul re-joined UFO in time for that December tour

Kerrang! magazine had a UK exclusive in November of the same year
