UFO

March 19, 2014 | The Assembly- Leamington Spa, UK

With the gig season hotting up and plenty of competition for everyone’s cash, I did wonder how well the tickets had sold for tonight’s first gig of the current UFO tour.  Upon entering The Assembley at Leamington Spa, it was apparent that sales had gone well however with the place pretty full.

Russian support act Redscool; whilst offering nothing particularly original, nevertheless put on an enthusiastic performance and were applauded generously by the Leamington crowd…despite a rather abrupt ending to their set which seemed to be caused by a power failure.  Whether this was by accident or indeed by the plug being pulled, we may never know…

Power restored, on came UFO and launched straight into “Lights Out” quickly followed by two tracks from the excellent Seven Deadly album.  Phil Mogg (vocals), Vinnie Moore (guitar), Andy Parker (drums), Paul Raymond (guitar & keyboards) and Rob De Luca on the bass proceeded to work through one of rocks finest back catalogues.  The band were in good form considering this was the first gig of the year for them. The guys were clearly enjoying themselves with Mogg in particular having a good time, joking with the crowd and taking requests.

“Shoot Shoot”, “Doctor Doctor”, “Love to Love”, “Only You Can Rock Me”, “Rock Bottom” amongst other tracks were aired and a couple of surprises also including “Pushed to the Limit”.  Two of my favourites,  “Burn Your House Down” and “Cherry” were stunning in the live environment.

The encore comprised of the aforementioned “Doctor Doctor” and “Shoot Shoot”.  I’ve caught UFO on the last five tours and they never disappoint, tonight was no exception.  A great gig from one of THE great rock bands.

Slotting in a handful of dates around their headline appearance at the Hard Rock Hell AOR Festival UFO made a welcome return to Leamington Spa Assembly. Having witnessed the debacle of Graham Bonnet two nights earlier it was a delight to not only be spoilt with an excellent sound mix, but also the world class vocals of Phil Mogg who can still belt out a full set with ease.

UFO

They open with a bonafide classic in ‘Lights Out’ which serves as a great start before brining us right up to date with ‘Fight Night’ from their latest Seven Deadly album. The band, like many classic rock bands, are often criticised for playing the same songs. It’s always going to be a challenge; they will rightly want to promote their new album with a few tracks from that and then there will be the older ones that everyone will want and expect to hear. This then doesn’t leave much room for surprises unless they play for over two hours. However, those surprises do come, and at the expense of the likes of ‘Mother Mary’ and ‘I’m A Loser’ we get treated to a Chapman era ‘Making Moves’, Walk On Water’s ‘Pushed To The Limit’ and after a few years absence, a nice return to the set of ‘Baby Blue’.

‘Burn Your House Down’ is outstanding, a highlight of Seven Deadly and a highlight tonight. This is followed by ‘Cherry’ which is alluded to be at the audience’s request. I guess it’s more likely a case of good timing. Paul Raymond flits between keyboards and rhythm guitar throughout and cuts a fine figure in his fabulous leopard print jacket. Along with Rob De Luca, his intro to ‘Love To Love’ is as exquisite as ever. Vinnie Moore has now been in the band for over a decade so it also seems fitting to revisit ‘When Daylight Comes To Town’.

UFO

Mogg’s witty banter is engaging and as entertaining as always, taking in, amongst other things, the art of twerking while cooking and a surfeit of Withnail & I quotes. As the set reaches the end, the closers are inevitable, but no less enjoyable. ‘Rock Bottom’ finishes the main set with Vinnie Moore stamping his own mark on the lengthy workout. By the time of the two song encore of ‘Doctor Doctor’ and ‘Shoot Shoot’, UFO have ticked all the boxes, made their mark and sent the Leamington crowd home happy.

In a couple of night’s time the band would be headlining at AOR2 in North Wales before an extensive
European tour (with guests Voodoo Six), but here was an opportunity to savour a band who are
definitely not resting on their laurels and recent albums have shown that a fire still burns.

O2 Sheffield - CONCERT REVIEW

...In to the venue around 7:45ish and missed the support. Found a spot towards the back near the mixing desk and could see everything very well. Took me a bit by surprise when the band came on. Faith Healer (you know, the old Alex Harvey classic) started coming through. My mate asked if UFO coming on. I say no, it’s Alex Harvey.

But on they did come and belted straight in to Lights Out. We’re off and at the races. These days at a UFO gig it’s two performances for the price of one with Phil’s inter-song random comedy routine. For example Andy Parker’s birthday (bit of a running theme), the BT advert, Miley Cirus, his wife, twerking and cooking and a few more besides. Very funny, very dry.

The music though……storming, first class. Tight show, Vinnie really ripped it up – world class. Phil’s voice is clean and powerful. Andy Parker, Paul Raymond and Rob De Luca keep it all together. Just as we all know they can and do so well. One can have no complaints. True professionals who still have it and most certainly still know how to do it.

Set list: Slightly refreshed. We had a very welcome Making Moves (off TWTWATI – a personal fave) and Pushed to the Limit off Walk on Water. Also along the way (probably not in running order) I Aint No Baby, Let it Roll, Wonderland, Fight Night, Burn Your House Down, Baby Blue, When Daylight Goes to Town, Only You Can Rock Me with an always fine Love to Love followed by an extended Rock Bottom to close out the main set...

It was now up to U.F.O. to close down the events proceedings and by firing off to a great start with ‘Lights Out’ they seemed to be heading down the right path.

Guitarist Vinnie Moore now looks well and truly settled amongst the ranks of Mogg and Co, and carves a niche in the sound making songs his own and adding a touch. Finishing with ‘Doctor Doctor’ it is what you would expect from the band, and probably what the mature crowd would really want – a good weekend for the young and the old, the male and female audience, and an inspiring set up and festival lay out.

Definitely worth the re-visit next year.

TRANSLATED FROM SWEDISH TO ENGLISH

Legendary UFO from London stood on the stage in 1974 and performed dirty and instantly classic Rock Bottom . Who could then believe that the 40 years later would burn a bunch of songs on the KB ?

The 66 - year-old standard-bearer and vocalist Phil Mogg strutted around the stage neatly dressed in all black and felt very relaxed and overwhelmed to be back on Swedish soil, and play. Phil was very eloquent between songs and looked somewhat cheerful as he gently pulled some English jokes. Wonderful Only You Can Rock Me got the unusually mature crowd to scream right out of pure joy. Many in the crowd was enough when it came to 40 years ago . Great to see and the atmosphere was very good inside the KB.

Love To Love was performed with dexterity and the acoustic guitar enhanced performance. Masterful song. Phil moved like a rocking plant in the morning breeze. It was easy to be drawn into their musical worl .

Guitar god Vinnie Moore took the word lead guitarist seriously and took a lot of space on stage. Rightly then he showed off a brilliant finger work and deep concentration and tremendous joy. He got all the guitar interested to stand and drool. His guitar sounds were high in the sound while Paul Raymond's guitar drowned by Vinnie hurricane - like rampage. The cheerful and made up the 69 -year-old guitarist / keyboardist looked , bizarrely , like a retired Per Gessle !

Rock Bottom gave Phil a little kick in the butt as he took in a little more and showed he still has a pleasant voice. Halfway through the song , he stepped off to rest and gave the band room for its long instrumental party that lasted several minutes. Smart move . A longer instrumental part where the band collaborate instead of something egobaserat and boring solo is preferable any day of the week.
UFO finished with three sweaty numbers including the obligatory mega hit Doctor Doctor and witty Shoot Shoot . The British brought an end to a cozy evening where nostalgia and feeling low in focus. To this day, UFO to be reckoned with and can still impress the audience.

CONCERT REVIEW - English Translation from German:

"UFO" rocked the gallery!

UFO - the band that exists since 1969, rocked the Buchholz gallery

The British rock band "UFO" made on their tour on Wednesday station in Buchholz event center "gallery".

The visitors - the most in an age who have grown up with bands that also live performance on stage the sound that can be heard on the LP or CD - were not disappointed. The band got going the same with their mega-hit "Lights Out" and showed what it stands for since its foundation in 1969: honest rock music, perfectly arranged songs and excellent timing with a dynamic that often no longer exist in modern bands. The fans were enthusiastic:
All hits were on the set list.

As a bonus, it was a Phil Mogg emotionally sung version of "Doctor Doctor".
Mark Hillmer, a winner of the raffled from WOCHENBLATT and the gallery tickets and even a guitarist in a band, was enthusiastic: "A super concert A band that stays true to their line:.. Guitars and vocal-oriented songs with dynamics A thank you to the WOCHENBLATT and the gallery team!"

Onne Hennecke, managing director of the gallery:
"Sorry, do not have as many fans found their way to the gallery but I think this rock event has once again shown that live bands like UFO belong to the event calendar of the gallery."

"UFO" rockte die Empore!
