Extreme Guitar Tour – Roth, Moore, Goldy
– Tupelo Music Hall – February 6th, 2015

...Next to take the stage was Vinnie Moore and company. Moore has been playing guitar professionally since the age of 12 and has played with Alice Cooper, Peter Frampton, and took over the guitar duties for UFO in 2003. Along with his solo career, he has a new 3 piece outfit called Red Zone Rider. This night Moore was touring solo, backed by members of the tour including Elliott Rubinson on bass and Alessandro Bertoni on keyboards. Although he has many writing credits under his belt, he stuck to his solo material this night and recognized his lost brother-in-arms, Gary Moore (no relation) on the fourth anniversary of his death, dedicating a song in his honor. Moore also announced a new UFO album due to drop in the States shortly with a tour to follow.

CONCERT REVIEW + PHOTOS - STUDIO 7

2015 Extreme Guitar Tour ~ January 27th ~ Studio 7 In Seattle, Washington

Paramour Group and JAAB Productions brought  the "2015 Extreme Guitar Tour" to Studio 7 in Seattle, Washington on Tuesday, January 27th. The players for the Northwest XG Tour was an all-star group of superb musicians formerly from the likes of Black Sabbath, Dio, MSG, Scorpions, UFO, and Royal Hunt. We are talking about "Extreme Talent" with legendary guitarists Uli Jon Roth, Vinnie Moore, and Craig Goldy! Also on the bill was the new super band, Black Knights Rising and introducing special guests from Toronto Canada, Old James....

...In 2013, at the Los Angeles NAMM Convention while jamming together, Craig Goldy (guitar, former Dio), Vinnie Appice (drums, former Black Sabbath) and Elliot Dean Rubinson (bass, former MSG) discovered their undeniable chemistry and the Craig Goldy Project was born. Realizing the buzz and growing fan base on the internet about this band of legendary musicians playing songs from Dio, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and Rainbow, Craig Goldy took the band to the next level and are now known as the Black Knights Rising.  For the XG Tour, Black Knights Rising, depending on where they're playing and the availability of musicians, will have special guests. John M. West (singer, songwriter Royal Hunt & solo artist) completed the Black Knights Rising line up on this night and is one of the most talented power metal vocalists I've heard in a while.

Having never heard of Black Knights Rising before, my excitement grew as I viewed the setlist being taped to the stage!  I then realized that what we were about to witness was a celebration of the life, music and soul of the band, Ronnie James Dio and the Strat-master of Deep Purple, Ritchie Blackmore!

They took the stage around 9pm and as Craig Goldy was settling in making sure his guitar and amp sounded perfect, John West tried to entertain us with some hooker jokes that were intentionally drowned out by Goldy's loud guitar every time John tried to deliver the punchline. That had me laughing hysterically! After a few hilarious interruptions, Craig Goldy was ready to go and BKR opened with Rainbow's "Death Alley Driver".

This band of all-stars really hit it big with me and the audience as we showed our enthusiasm and sang along to Rainbow's, "Man On The Silver Mountain," and Dio's "Stand Up and Shout." John West did an amazing job on vocals covering many accomplished and loved vocalists in some of the most important rock and metal bands.

Vinnie Appice replaced Bill Ward on the drums for the 'Mob Rules' album released in 1981 and when asked about the comparison of the two drummers, Dio explained that Vinnie Appice brought a new flavor to the band and that he was a listener and played off of people. I saw this with Black Knights Rising as Vinnie closely watched the other band members and played off of their sound with expert technique and flair.
It was during "Mob Rules" that Craig Goldy delivered his first astounding guitar solo, but it was during the Deep Purple song "Mistreated" that Craig Goldy's solos left us only able to open our mouths to scream out our love for this performance! During our outburst of praise, Craig made a fist over his heart and smiled, a shining moment for this greatly admired guitarist.

Elliot Rubinson, wearing his Round 1 shirt (playing with three bands on this tour), lit up the stage with his personality and ended the BKR show with a late bass note, a total set up by the band, that made everyone in the band laugh and was a perfect ending to a perfect set!

Vinnie Moore started his career in 1986 with his first studio album 'Minds Eye'. This was an award winning album that Vinnie recorded in eleven days at the age of 21. Vinnie is well known for his melodic instrumentals, fast fingers, and clean shredding and being the guitar freak that I am, I was eager to see him perform.

With his brand new Minds Eye guitar, presented to him by Dean Guitars, in tow, Vinnie Moore (UFO guitarist & solo artist), Elliot Rubinson (bass-Round 2), Alesandro Bertoni (keyboards), and Ritchie Monica (drums) hit the stage around 10:15pm with a set list that included songs from three of his solo albums, 'Minds Eye,' 'Meltdown,' and 'Maze'. I was very impressed at the different instrumental styles Vinnie played for us. He hit us hard and heavy with songs like, "Check It Out," and "Meltdown," took us on a journey with "Daydream" and then wore his heart on his strings for, "Rain."

CONCERT REVIEW

Extreme Guitar – Four Sets at Vamp’d from the Best in Classic and Modern Hard Rock!

Vamp’d never ceases to amaze me. This has become the hot home for all things rock and roll in the Vegas Valley. One of the most recent announcements that immediately got the attention of this rock and roll fan was for something called the Extreme Guitar tour. Names like Vinnie Moore, Joe Lynn Turner, Uli Jon Roth, and Vinny Appice appearing on ads for this immediately got my attention. I knew where I needed to be on this night, as did rock and roll fans all across Las Vegas.

This is a difficult night to analyze because SO MUCH was going on! Having been out to Vamp’d regularly for the past several years, I can honestly say this was the first time I went out there and was subjected to FOUR sets of music! With tons of rock icons, past and present on the stage, it was a relentless night that never let up at any point. While not the perfect experience there was not a single dissatisfied rocker in the venue.

The festivities of this rock and roll evening were kicked off with Old James, an act out of Canada that I was not familiar with. This band’s sound was more modern than the majority of the established acts playing the venue tonight, but they definitely won me over with a solid selection of covers and original tunes. The highlight of this set was a cover of Cold Sweat, the Thin Lizzy standard, done up great by young, energetic rockers who clearly appreciate the classics but at the same time bring their own thing to the table. This is a group I will be keeping my eye on in the future for sure!

The second set of the evening was from legendary American guitar hero Vinnie Moore. Moore first would rise to prominence in the 1980s on Mike Varney’s Shrapnel Records, releasing a number of incredible instrumental records. In the past decade, he became Michael Schenker’s replacement in UFO, reinvigorating the fire that band once had, leading them into a whole new era of rock excellence. Furthermore, he has also played in the side project Red Zone Rider, alongside drummer Scot Coogan (Lynch Mob, Ace Frehley Band) and vocalist/bassist Kelly Keeling (Baton Rouge, MSG).

Moore set was definitely one of the highlights of the evening. Over the years he has been a very technical and proficient player, and has a bluesy rock style all his own. The real surprise about this set was the fact that it was almost entirely instrumental! Aside from an appearance from John West, who sang vocals on By the Rainbow’s End (from the Red Zone Rider album). Moore and company clearly wowed the audience with this display of guitar superiority.

The third set was a true supergroup, if there ever was one, combining former Rainbow vocalist Joe Lynn Turner, former Giuffria/Dio guitarist Craig Goldy, and former Dio/Black Sabbath drummer Vinny Appice. Elliott Rubinson, owner of Dean Guitars, played bass for this portion of the show (he made multiple appearances in the night throughout the sets). All of these musicians have been keeping busy, with Goldy in Dio Disciples, Turner in the new Rated X supergroup, and Appice in Drum Wars shows and the Last in Line band.

Every rock and roll show needs a throwback to the classic hits of the past, and this supergroup did that and them some. The set was a mixture of classic Rainbow and Deep Purple tunes. Turner came out immediately, opening with Death Alley Driver, one of my all time favorite Rainbow songs. This performance even included one Dio-era Rainbow song, Long Live Rock and Roll, as a tribute to that great fallen frontman. There was even a medley of Deep Purple tunes; Turner served a brief stint as the frontman of Purple in the late 80s/early 90s. This fan personally would have to have heard some tracks from Slaves and Masters, the DP album Turner sang on, but overall, all of these renditions were solid. Turner is still a kick-ass singer!

Uli Jon Roth was one of the main reasons I am sure this crowd of local rock and metal fans decided to attend the show this night. With unrivaled guitar skills, it was Roth that made the Scorpions’ early, pre-major label years truly unique. His post-Scorps ventures, while lesser known, have been equally impressive. Roth had played Vamp’d about two years prior; his set then and there was this fan’s favorite rock and roll show of 2013.

Of course, Mr. Roth, with a band of all-star musicians (including the son of Cream drummer Ginger Baker!), thoroughly rocked this audience. Roth has a unique style of guitar playing that anyone who has listened to or who has seen him live will instantly be taken in by. This was a prime example of that; Roth’s unique approach to things is one of the reason he remains one of the best guitarists in the world to this day. This set combined Roth-era Scorpions classics, with some of his later gems. We even got to hear his take on Hendrix in the encore! This was a great set but the time restrictions imposed due to their being so many acts definitely hindered it somewhat. I would loved to have heard Pictured Life and the Night the Master Comes (the latter was from Electric Sun, Roth’s post-Scorpions band), but overall this was a more than satisfactory night from one of rock’s true guitar legends.

Overall, the audience got four sets of solid rock and roll on this fine evening, one that further establishes Vamp’d as Vegas’ premier venue for all things rock and roll. With more shows on deck for the coming months, it is clear that will not be changing anytime soon. In the meantime, if you have an opportunity to attend an Extreme Guitar show, the opportunity is well worth taking!

The Paramour Group and JAAB Productions Provide Update on
2015 XG Extreme Guitar Tour

The Paramour Group and JAAB Productions present the 2015!  The XG Tour includes performances by guitar greats Uli Jon Roth, Vinnie Moore, Craig Goldy and introduces the new band Black Knights Risin.  The tour is sponsored by Dean Guitar and dDrum.

As a special treat for fans attending the show on January 31st in St. Charles, IL legendary front man Joe Lynn Turner has been added as a special guest.  Known for his exceptional lead vocal performances with Deep Purple, Rainbow and Yngwie Malmsteen, Turner will rock St. Charles alongside some of the best guitarists in the world!

Due to popular demand, additional shows have been added to the upcoming tour and another week of dates scheduled for February 10th through February 15th.  These dates will be announced next week.  FOR THESE DATES ONLY, Black Knights Rising will see a bit of a lineup change with Bobby Rondinelli taking over on the drums and Tim Ripper Owens on vocals.

In addition to the tour, Uli Jon Roth has announced that he will be conducting a Sky Academy Guitar Seminar on February 1st in Chicago, IL @ Reggie’s Rock Club.  This will be the only Sky Academy Seminar on the tour and tickets can be purchased HERE

The aim of Sky Academy hosted by Uli Jon Roth is to provide knowledge and inspiration to those who take guitar playing seriously and to help them reach a new plateau. The seminars are designed to open musicians’ eyes to new possibilities and to trigger an awakening of the student’s full potential and talent.

Conceived in the summer of 2013 by JAAB Productions, it debuted in January of 2014 during NAMM week with a mini tour of five shows along the West Coast of California. These shows featured multiple artists performing on stage together, often with four & five guitarists jamming with dueling drummers.

The original concept started five years earlier when producer Andrew Banks paired guitarists of notoriety with Kofi Baker to play extended jam versions of Cream songs under the title of Extreme Cream. Guitarists that have played these shows, often lasting two & a half hours in length, include Mike Keneally, Uli Jon Roth, Gary Hoey, Michael Angelo Batio & Roy Z.

This two plus hour, multi drum kit & layered guitarist approach was perfected in early 2014 when Tour / Production Manager Jeff Agins took the concept on the road for five dates along the west coast. The response was VERY well received & requests poured in to take the XG Tour on the road across the US.

Canadian rockers Old James will be opening every show.

Drumming for Uli Jon Roth will be Kofi Baker, son of CREAM drummer Ginger Baker.

Elliot Rubinson, CEO of Dean Guitars will be featured on bass during the performances of all three guitarists.

Black Knights Rising are: Craig Goldy - guitar, Vinnie Appice – drums, Mark Boals – vocals, Allesandro Bertoni - keyboards and Elliot Rubinson – bass.

The fans have spoken & after several months of production, the first National XG Tour 2015 has become a reality!
